I’ve had some pretty amazing maternity and newborn sessions recently….but not TWINS!! Love these little girls, so alike yet so different. As I was photographing them I kept wondering what they would be like at the age of 2 or 12 or 22? Will they look alike? think alike? Maybe because I’m getting older, maybe its because i’ve been around alot of pregnant women lately, but i’m completely fascinated and in awe. Women have babies every day, yet each time its as though it was the first time in the history of forever — The joy, the excitement, the mystery!! What other thing in life brings so much happiness and creates such completeness than having a baby (or 2). God certainly is good.

Man’s Best Friend | Pittsburgh PA Maternity and Newborn Photography

Its true what they say that a dog is a man’s best friend. Or a child’s. I grew up with dogs in my house, so do my kids. Right now, I’ll admit that having THREE (yes, you read that right) THREE dogs is a bit much, but I love them still the same. My current oldest dog has been with us for about 6 years. Found as a stray, he and my youngest became quick friends and as you can see by this picture has been there growing up with him too.

I LOVE when people include their pets in their family photographs. They ARE part of the family after all! So when this couple told me they were bringing their dog, I was very excited!! Little did I know, she’d be such a big sweetheart! Protectors, guardians, pals, friends… This family’s newest baby and their “old” baby I’m sure will grow up together and be best friends always. <3

Its true. In fact, if you ask 10 adults if they like to get their pictures taken, probably 1/2 would say they dont. I dont. I constantly scrutinize the photo. “Do I really have that many wrinkles” “I didnt think my nose was that big” “ugh, the bags under my eyes” “two chins??” Recently I had a friend take a few pictures of me. Its was hard for me but I really needed to “feel” what people feel when I’m taking their pictures. And the fact that I just dont have many that arent in my car with my iphone pointed at the rear view mirror because I happened to look up and saw the light was really pretty on my hair. So here I was, all vulnerable, getting my photos done. And what I found out was, IT REALLY WASNT THAT PAINFUL. I now have a few really beautiful photos that I can share with my kids, my family, my friends. I can keep them to myself if I want. I can lock them away for only me to see. I can share them in 20 years. I can do whatever I WANT WITH THEM. But I have them. I have them saying “here I am. I’m getting older, I’m getting wrinklier, but its me. Its me.

My niece was home over the Easter holiday. She’s pregnant, due in June. I’ve been asking her for a few months about when we were going to do her maternity pictures. “I just dont know, Kath. I just dont feel like them. I’m not sure if its because I’m pregnant, but they just dont appeal to me right now.” “OK” I said. “Can I do some experimental things then? Maybe shoot some polaroids, maybe try some film. If we get a few, we get a few”.

So that is what we did. We went out at sunset, and spent a few minutes on the top of a hill at my parents farm. And you know what? Just like when I saw my pictures, she saw hers. and shared with me that she was glad we did them.

I guess the point to all of this is, we dont always feel pretty. We dont always look our best. We dont always want our pictures taken. But its US. its YOU. its ME. Its this time in our lives. Right now. Its a time in her life. Right Now. Two months before giving birth to the most amazing person she will ever meet. And we got it. We froze a moment in time with a camera and a sunset on the side of a hill. And, I thank you. For allowing me the honor of preserving this moment for you. XO

Last week, I went to a workshop given by Cheryl Jacobs. When I first started out in the business way back in 2004, CJ was one of the first photographers offering workshops (or at least that I knew about). I wanted to go, but was fairly new, and didnt know much and wasnt sure about going. Recently she announced she was offering again, and I JUMPED on it, for a few reasons. 1. she shoots film. 2. everything i saw of hers, i loved 3. she has this quote that i’ve had printed off and hanging in my office for years. It was destiny I thought.

Going to this kind of workshop for me was taking a good step back and really taking a deep hard long look at what I do, and where I want to go. I think as photographers our work constantly evolves. I know mine surely has. The questions for me is, for the better? I do this to make a living, so when I look at my work, does it speak to me? or am I shooting for what I think my clients want? both? neither?

I saw this short film on YouTube the other day and I love the part where he says “”when I started in photography, I was using my hands to create images. And it seems like overnight, digital came, and all of that came to an end….I lost something I loved….. everyone around me had the same camera, they all have the same signature…”

When I was a kid, I spent hours in the darkroom with my dad who took pictures for fun. Watching him slide a piece of paper in solution and then seeing this image appear was like magic to me. There was something raw and real and amazing to me. What is it about film that makes your heart flutter? I’ve never been a “film” shooter, sure my first camera was film, but only because digital didnt exist( at least not to my pocketbook) When I made the decision to make photography my business, I purchased a Nikon D70 Dslr and have been Nikon Digital every since.

Where this goes from here? I dont know to be honest. What I do know is, like the quote from the video, I dont want to look around and see everyone having the same camera as me, the same look, the same feel. I want to continue of this journey of photography experimenting with film and toy cameras and polaroids and whatever else stirs a little of my heart. I want to continue to change and evolve. I hope you take that journey with me.

Kids I get to see every year | Pittsburgh Child and Family Photography

I’ve been photographing these kids for years. Every couple years, Dad surprises his wife with a collection of images from their past sessions in a beautiful album. When I’m pulling up the images I think how amazing it is that I get this opportunity to watch these kids grow. Not only watch them, I get to document it. I get to spend a few hours with them, photographing them, preserving them in that exact moment in time. I can look at any image that I took and be immediately sent back to that moment… Its a priceless feeling. A feeling that I thank God everyday for allowing me to do.
